Over the past weeks we have been undertaking extensive teacher professional development in the field of English teaching in South East Asia, Japan and Korea. One of the themes that kept raising its head was the issue of culture underpinning English second language studies and the dichotomy of opinions ranging from the extensive effect culture plays in the classroom to the opposite view that culture does not play any role in language teaching. Do we or do we not incorporate English-culture learning into English-language learning by considering the perspectives of EFL learners?
